Speakers representing the Department for Business and Trade, the House of Lords, and banks including NatWest, HSBC and Deutsche Bank will take to the stage at the inaugural Smart Data Show on 15-16 October in London.

The Smart Data Show is one of two co-located shows at Open Banking Expo UK and Europe 2024 launched in recognition of the direction the ecosystem is moving in.

In the King’s Speech delivered on 17 July, it was revealed that the newly-elected Labour Government will pass into law a Digital Information and Smart Data (DISD) Bill to “harness the power of data for economic growth”.

With Smart Data firmly on the government’s agenda, Lord Chris Holmes, a member of the UK House of Lords, will open Day Two of the Show with a keynote outlining the vision for a Smart Data economy.

Elsewhere across the two-day show, visitors can expect sessions covering the Financial Data Access (FIDA) framework, Open Insurance, Open Data-enabled product innovation and the future of Smart Data.

Stuart Coleman, director, consultancy and learning at the Open Data Institute will deliver a presentation, titled ‘Why data sharing and the UK’s Smart Data policy agenda matters’, in which he’ll discuss some of the early use cases that are emerging and the opportunities to businesses from enhanced data portability.

A Fireside Chat between Liz Brandt, co-founder and chief executive officer of Ctrl-Shift and Barry O’Donohoe, Raidiam’s co-founder and chief executive officer will shed light on how Smart Data can be progressed and the sectors that are likely to be first movers, as well as the incentives required to make it a reality.

Across the two-day show, visitors can also expect to hear from Agnieszka Scott, head of Smart Data at the Department for Business and Trade, as well as Tamian Godfrey, market development lead, payments and data at NatWest, and Gavin Starks, founder and chief executive officer of Icebreaker One.

The agenda includes an Open Data-enabled product innovation “brainstorm”, with speakers Joris Hensen, founder and co-lead of the Deutsche Bank API program, Georgios Miltiadous, head of Open Banking delivery at HSBC, and Phillip Mind, UK Finance’s director for digital technology and innovation.

Kelly Stanley, co-founder of Open Banking Expo, said: “With the UK government having committed to bringing in a Smart Data Bill, it is time to broaden conversations at Open Banking Expo UK & Europe beyond Open Banking and Open Finance, to a future where Smart Data is truly embedded in our everyday lives.

“The Smart Data Show is, therefore, an opportunity to explore the opportunities and obstacles that need to be considered on the road to making Smart Data a reality and unlocking data portability for the benefit of the UK economy.”

She added: “Visitors to our first Smart Data Show can expect to hear from policymakers, bankers and innovators as they take part in game-changing sessions, so don’t miss out.”

The Open Finance Show is also co-located with Open Banking Expo UK and Europe across both days, while Qualco Live will run at the Business Design Centre in London on 16 October.

Visitors to the Smart Data Show will have comprehensive access to all three co-located events, which will provide a holistic view of the current and future state of Open Banking, Open Finance and Smart Data.
